The Gentlemen collage depicts three of Chicago’s landmarks: the totem pole in Lincoln Park, the building façade that housed Hotel Covent in the early 20th century, and one of the twenty rainbow pylons of the Boystown neighborhood. The forms in the composition were taken out of their actual contexts and were scaled and rearranged.

The Covent Hotel was built in 1915 and is located at 2653-65 North Clark Street in the Lincoln Park neighborhood.

The original Kwa-Ma-Rolas totem pole was carved out of a single log of red cedar by the Kwakiutl Indians of Vancouver Island and was gifted to the City of Chicago in the 1920s, after the World’s Columbian Exposition. Chicago donated the totem pole to the University of British Columbia in 1982. James Kraft, its previous owner, later hired the artist Tony Hunt to produce a replica, which was installed in Lincoln Park in 1986.

The Rainbow Pylons were created in 1997 and are located along North Halsted Street in the Boystown neighborhood.
